I had the privilege of working with Red Mountain Grace when I first moved to Birmingham in 2018, and it remains one of the most meaningful experiences of my life.

At its core, this was (and still is) a grassroots organization—built by volunteers, guided by a hardworking board, and driven by a team of people who all knew, in some personal way, what it meant to walk through medical crisis. There was no ego, no red tape—just people with big hearts showing up for others during their hardest seasons.

What struck me most was the level of care that went into every detail. Volunteers didn’t just tidy up apartments—they cleaned with love and intention, stocked essentials, and made sure every space felt like a soft landing. Families didn’t just receive keys to a temporary place—they were handed peace, dignity, and a chance to breathe.

Some of my favorite memories are of watching families settle in, hang pictures, light a candle, and make an unfamiliar apartment feel like home, even if just for a few weeks.

Red Mountain Grace isn’t just another nonprofit. It’s the heartbeat of Birmingham. The quiet welcome committee for those who are hurting, overwhelmed, and facing an avalanche of unexpected costs. $20 a night for a fully furnished apartment near the hospital? That’s not just generosity. That’s a miracle.

I’m deeply thankful for this organization and the work they continue to do. They remind me what community should look like.

We stayed with RMG during my husband’s heart transplant. I can’t say enough about how kind they are. The staff went above and beyond. They check in on you, pray with you and treat you like family.They provided us with a clean, safe space that allowed us moments of normalcy in our extended months in the hospital. We love the folks at RMG! Highly recommend.

I have volunteered for Red Mountain Grace for almost 8 years & been privileged to help provide a clean, comfortable place for people to stay while receiving critical medical care. It’s the little extras that the staff do that show how much they care— Christmas surprises, Thanksgiving dinner, Easter lilies, birthday remembrances. This is a compassionate ministry that truly serves from the heart.

My experience last year with Red Mountain Grace was terrible! We were previously approved to move into one of their apartments and even after I already explained that I was the only family member that was able to take care of my wife even though they required at least two people for care. Two days before my wife was being released from UAB Hospital after receiving a heart and double lung transplant; I was told that they weren’t going to accept us into one of their apartments due to I was going to have to pay for outside caregivers to assist me with her recovery / rehabilitation; basically they changed their mind in which it was in their right to do. So, I had to locate another location very quickly to move to which ended up being 10 times more of the amount than what I was expecting from Red Mountain Grace.

So, don’t count on them entirely like I did! If you do get to stay here, then you are very lucky! Just be prepared to stay somewhere else!
