I would like to share my disappointing experience with the Firehouse shelter in Birmingham, Alabama. Despite its intended purpose, the facility seems to only support select individuals, and I was consistently turned away without justification. The replacement of the original building, founded by an African American man, with a new structure having only 20 beds is insufficient for the city's homeless population. The Firehouse has also discontinued its dinner service for homeless individuals on the streets, worsening Birmingham's food insecurity. To survive, one must now possess financial resources or food stamps. Regrettably, organizations like the Salvation Army and Firehouse are failing to provide adequate support, offering poor-quality food and limited servings. Moreover, the staff's unprofessional behavior and discriminatory attitudes are alarming. In comparison, shelters in Jacksonville, Florida, provide exemplary services, including regular showers and reliable food. Therefore, I strongly advise against the Firehouse shelter in Birmingham, Alabama, and recommend alternative options.

I used to volunteer here years ago wit he YMG for troubled youth! Fast forward 20 something years into the future I found myself here looking for help with homelessness and drug addiction, only to find out that this is a place of business that strives on crippling the mentally challenged people that grace their doors looking for help with various issues in order to stay in business! Don't get me wrong you find some great staff members like a few of the case workers and some program assistants but you also find some individuals with some hardened and black hearts filled with hatred towards people of various back grounds more in particular people of color!
To tell my story plain and simple you have some staff members at the shelter who fear the day that a strong young black man rises above the influence of drugs and poverty and learn how to surrender to GOD and allow GOD to change him for the best interests of himself and his family and society as a whole, sadly to say you have those individuals that wish to see people of color and impoverished low class white men and women repeatedly go through the vicious cycle of homelessness and addiction in order to fill their pockets and keep the doors of a breeding ground for death open by aiding and pampering drug dealers to prey on the weak and broken spirit of the already defeated people that come genuinely seeking help looking to get away from the nightmare that I know all to well that comes with the disease of addiction and the terrors of homelessness!
Trust me I could say lots more but I have found some glimmers of hope in this place but with out the proper exposure to what's done in the dark there can never truly be a place of refuge for people like myself called the firehouse where a sick and lost individuals such as myself can be remolded and taught a new way of living that will help end the cycle of addiction and homelessness!

I was new to the area, having moved to Birmingham not even 2 weeks ago. since arriving I searched for local shelters and this one came up on my searches. this place is free, and doesn't seem to have a definite time you can stay there. they feed you pretty generously. however, despite your basic needs being met there was one issue I had that made me write this review now. every night they search you for any dangerous items. seems simple enough and I didn't have a problem. they also take your cell phone and return it to you the following morning. so far I had no issues. I had a pretty expensive phone, a Samsung galaxy s3. I used it for GPS, all my contacts were on it, this phone meant a lot to me. being homeless and looking for work, you need a phone. this is where things got bad. the staff member that checked me in, didn't check my phone down. and it was also missing the following morning. not only that, after talking to management they weren't going to be able to replace it. if you stay at this shelter, be prepared to have your items stolen by staff, and if your like me, with no other options but this place, then just stay out of Birmingham. because this experience has made me leave this state entirely.
