My husband and I greatly enjoyed our experience with Birth Kalamazoo. The classes were invaluable in educating us for our labor, delivery and 4th Trimester. We also had an amazing doula, Izzy, for our labor/delivery and postpartum. Izzy is fabulous and incredibly supportive. I highly recommend her! She is incredibly knowledgable and I learned so much from her. She also allowed our labor/delivery experience to be enjoyable knowing we had her guidance and support throughout the process. We cannot thank Izzy and Birth Kalamazoo enough for all they provided us.

My husband and I took the Express birth class with Nicole and it was absolutely amazing. She gave us so much great information and made the class interesting and fun. 8 had taken two other hospital based classes, and those just made me more anxious. Nicole truly helped me feel empowered to give birth, rather than afraid. The class and Nicole get 5 enthusiastic stars from me

But our doula experience was terrible. We had Izzy, and she seemed okay when we met with her before the delivery, although we didn't seem to connect well with her. She told us the things that she does during a delivery and how things would go. She said she would ask questions to help is advocate for our birth plan, suggest positions, do things to help deal with the pain of contractions, etc. But she really didn't do much of anything, when it came time. I texted her constantly throughout the day as we were trying to get contractions started after my water broke, so she absolutely knew that we were going to have a baby that day. I let her know when contractions were 5 minutes apart, when they were getting more intense, etc. I really wished she would come, as I was having trouble dealing with the pain, but I also wasn't sure when the right time for her to come was, and figured she would know based on what I was telling her. Apparently you have to ask them to come, which she never said during our initial meetings, and she never asked me if I wanted her to come as contractions got more intense. After 3 hours of contractions 5 minutes apart we were headed to the hospital. Izzy said she needed to have dinner with her kids before she could leave to meet us there (and she had a 45 minute drive to get to us). She showed up almost 2 hours later. She filled the tub and pulled out some battery powered candles. I got in the tub and pretty much couldn't move and was in so much pain. She didn't suggest other positions, didn't coach my husband how to help me, didn't try to do anything like massage or counter pressure or other things they mentioned in the classes. She just sat there looking at me. I finally had to ask for help with a different position because I was on my knees in the tub and it was painful. That was the one time she suggested something to try. I had gone into the experience not wanting an epidural, but the pain of contractions had gotten away from me and my coping skills long before she had arrived to help. Unfortunately, I had to wait a few hours before anesthesia could come to do the epidural. When they finally checked me before doing the epidural I was at 9.5cm. I had specifically gone over with her before birth that is I was that far along when I was checked, I did not want the epidural. But I had asked for it a few hours before so I had it in my head that it was going to happen. I really wish she had done what she said she would do, and just stopped everybody for a minute to point out that I was pretty much through transition and about to be pushing, and asked if I was sure I still wanted the epidural. When you're 9.5cm there isn't a lot of thinking going on, and she completely fell down on helping me and the staff consider my options. After the epidural, things completely stalled out and we waited for 6 hours to deliver. Izzy just sat there with us. It was awkward. I wish we had taken that time to get some sleep, or that my husband and I could have spent our last few hours before becoming parents together alone. But instead I felt like we had to entertain Izzy. When it finally came time to push, she again failed to advocate for my desires as we had discussed. I had specifically told her that I needed help advocating for myself with the doctor, and she let him bully me into a lot of things that I expressly started I did not want, without ever saying a word. Overall, my birth was traumatic and not anything like what I wanted. I had hired a doula for very specific reasons, and Izzy failed in all of those. I wish she hadn't been part of my birth, because she just added to the trauma by not doing her job.

Izzy is a great doula and an AMAZING human. I appreciated her guidance, direction and light heartedness during my entire journey! She not only supported me but my husband during unfamiliar times and you can tell she loves what she does. We were one of two deliveries back to back and even on little sleep she was a rockstar supporting us. We appreciated the time and effort Birth Kalamazoo took in selecting the perfect doula for us. It was a great experience!!

My husband and I just completed the Express Birth Class with Nicole and we had a wonderful experience! Nicole made the classroom environment engaging and inclusive for all the couples in the class. With her doula experience and welcoming nature, we felt very comfortable asking her various questions and participating in the learning activities.
With all the hospital birthing classes booked up, we were very grateful Birth Kalamazoo still had availability to help us prepare for having our first child in the New Year. My husband and I both feel more confident and more informed on what we can expect when it comes to labor, birth, and early postpartum. I hope they continue to offer this course for future birth persons and partners!

My wife and I took Jessica's class and we were blown away by her knowledge. We felt very welcome as queer, soon to be parents. Jessica used gender neutral language when talking about birth partners and birthers and we really appreciated that. Labor, delivery, and parenthood can be very unpredictable but we felt as prepared as we could have been because of these classes and our doula. My wife also took the prenatal yoga class and really benefited from it and enjoyed the support of her classmates as well. Thank you so much, Birth Kalamazoo!

We are so thankful for our doula Christy Kincaid and highly recommend using Birth Kalamazoo for their doula services.

The birth of our daughter was well planned with Christy’s help. Having her in labor and delivery by our side, was like having a very experienced family member with us to ask questions and help us quickly pivot from our birth plan as needed.

Christy advocated for us and our plan and was there consulting us when it got scary, explaining things so we could understand. We are forever thankful for her support and expertise!
