One of the gems to visit in the Marin Headlands, part of NPS' Golden Gate National Recreation Area is the Marin Mammal Center.

The Marine Mammal Center is a remarkable organization with three key distinguishing features:

• Extensive Marine Mammal Rescue Efforts: Since its founding in 1975, the center has rescued over 24,000 marine mammals across a 600-mile coastal range including California and Hawaii.

• Comprehensive Research and Conservation: The center goes beyond simple animal rescue, conducting critical scientific research that provides insights into marine mammal and ocean health.

• Innovative and Sustainable Facility: Located on a former Nike Missile site in the Marin Headlands, the center features a state-of-the-art facility built with sustainability in mind.

Remarkably, they can care for up to 275 animals simultaneously and have specialized facilities including a veterinary hospital with capabilities for complex surgeries.

Definitely worth a visit to see marine mammal rehabilitation in action. In addition to the small exhibit section, and plenty of helpful docents to show you around, there's a "Dexter-like" observatory where they try to determine what caused various animals' demise. That part isn't for the squeamish.

The whole valley where the institute is based is quite cool, including the beach seemingly in the middle of nowhere.

Excellent informational tour. Super fun to see pools and cages where animals were housed. My 17 yr old son enjoyed the experience as much as I did.

I absolutely loved this place! I would recommend it to anybody who has kids, is into animal science or conservation or marine biology.....really most anyone at all. The artwork around the facility was great and the gift shop is small, it's not like they are just trying to make money and make this place into an attraction. They have great tour guides and volunteers here. It was cool to see how many animals they help 😁very interesting and worth the trip, most definitely!!

Great educational experience! The tour is free with guided or self guided options, located in a beautiful valley, and cute gifts from the shop.
Love that we also get to peek into the kitchen and laboratory to see the great work people are doing here to save these mammals

Super cool place. It was a lot of fun to take a tour. The staff and volunteers are friendly and knowledgeable... And there are a few places near by to add to the experience... Walk on a beach or hike to the lighthouse (check the schedule as the pass to light house closes pretty early).

A really good educational center with tours and even an educational lab session that we saw happening while there to visit. I would say it would be accessible to upper elementary and above to make the most of it. Definitely would not recommend toddlers or preschool age. My kids (preschool ages) were hoping to see live sea lions and seals, which they have in the recovery pens, but difficult for them to see and so they were happy being there.

Took the guided tour. Very informative and kids friendly. It’s not a zoo so you won’t be able to see animals close-up
