The competition sounds like a great idea but isn't for everyone. In addition it has become very clear over the years that the organization itself has neither the resources or interest in ensuring Nanowrimo related spaces are safe for participants.

Dangerous for kids, and didn't address those dangers when it was presented. Cover ups too. Kids and others had to fight to get the information out about grooming within the organization. It's a dark thing. There's sources online for anyone who wants to do research but be warned that it's distressing.

What used to be a website designed to encourage writing, has now become an exclusive club. Their staff, board of directors and writers board do not reflect their DEI statement.

In all honesty: These guys and the people participating in their events have been absolutely wonderful and my experience with NaNoWriMo has literally allowed me to make friends from around the world over the years. Please support these guys, or enjoy what they provide - fun and community and a CHALLENGE.
