My ex-husband, who I am very good friends with, recently had a major orthopedic back surgery and needed some additional time for recovery and therapy before he could safely return home, so I chose this facility, based on a number of good recommendations I received.
This facility managed to surprise me at every turn. The building itself is older construction, which reminds you of 'Nursing Homes of old where people go to die'. But LCV was anything but this!
The front entrance walkway is meticulously kept and landscaped with beautiful roses. And as soon as you walk in you hear the noise of activity and living! Not dying! To the left I could see a room full of seniors playing bingo, laughing and talking, and to the right, there were easily 10 folks working with physical therapy or working on the gym equipment. The staff was smiling, made eye contact with you, acknowledged your presence, were polite and were actively working with the patients or their families. Parts of the inside are somewhat older construction as well, but I found the facility to be clean and decently cared for. It smelled clean and was organized and there were literally members of the staff everywhere. The weather was nice while my exhusband was there and from his room I could see a dozen patients/residents sitting in the back courtyard talking and socializing. His room had a sliding glass door so we could open the door for fresh air and he could take a walk around that courtyard straight from his room.
The rooms are on the small size but they were able to accomodate our request for a private room, which was great! I know they can't always do that but the promised they would try, and they delivered. And as with any older facility, there were occasional issues with the structure itself. The sliding glass door in his room needs a little TLC so that it could open a little easier (although it did open) and the TV, although new, had a funny glitch about turning off and on, but one of the actual physicians of the facility walked by his room, saw him struggling with it and came in to fix it! Like he went and got a stepstool, and tools and fixed it! He didn't "inform the maintenance team" or say "I'll send someone to take a look at it", he did it himself, and as he was doing it, another PA and a nurse came in as well and a team of three worked to fix the TV! That was just downright refreshing to see medical staff take the time to help a patient the way they did! And my ex told me himself that the actual medical care he received was exceptionally good as well. His pain was well controlled, the RN provided really good wound care on his surgical site, the physical therapists stopped in several times a day to work with him, he was offered a free newspaper everyday (which he loved) and he always had clean bedding and he said the showering room was excellent. Prompt, polite and genuine, from the CNAs to the social worker and case manager, to the physicians and therapists and even the medical director herself, Cam, popped into say hi and see how things were going, all of it was a pleasant surprise and left me feeling really good about the choice to send my ex there.
I've seen much newer, modern facilities but the care the patients receive at those facilities is almost non-existent. I'll take a heavy glass sliding door any day to receive the great care we got there.
