My mom was in memory care at Oakwood Meadows during the summer of 2024. Prior to moving mom here I visited several memory care facilities in the area, this one definitely had the nicest set up and seemed to be clean and the residents appeared to be content and well cared for. Their pricing is also one of the most reasonable and they take the ALW. My mom was only there for a little over a month but I spent a lot of time there during her stay. I was there at all times of the day observing how they handle things. I got to know a few of the caregivers and they were all very kind and genuinely cared for the residents but they have a really tough job to do. For the most part, they took great care with mom but I do believe that has a lot to do with my consistent presence and willingness to get involved and get to know the people who work there. I did witness things I didn't like happening to residents who's families were much less present. How they handle incontinence issues and bathroom-ing is a BIG deal to me. They are supposed to the take able bodied residents to the bathroom every 2-3 hours but I wasn't sure if that was actually happening. Sometimes mom would refuse to go so it was difficult to know. One resident who is in a wheelchair and not capable of standing to get onto the toilet was left to do their business in the their pants in the middle of the community room even when they were begging to be taken to the bathroom. I understand they can't move them to the toilet but they could at least roll them into the bathroom so that they're in an "appropriate place" to do their business in privacy, and then immediately get them onto the bed to change them instead of making them do it in a room full of people and sit in it until someone takes them to bed to be changed. That was definitely the worst thing I saw happen! Thankfully, my mom was more able bodied and could get onto the toilet if someone took her to the bathroom and assisted her. If your loved one is not able bodied just make sure to ask for details about the bathroom protocol and show up often to make sure they're doing what they should be.
The food is just ok, but mom barely ate anything regardless of quality so for us cuisine wasn't a big factor in our satisfaction. Choosing a memory care facility for your loved one is NEVER easy to do but I do feel like I made the right choice with Oakwood Meadows. IMO it's as good as it's going to get no matter how much your willing pay. Regardless of where you decide to go, the level of service you get is directly related to your level of presence and involvement.
