My wife, Gaylene, and I have been residents of Northern Lakes Independent Living for 2 1/2 years and only have high praise for our luxurious lifestyle provided by Karen, the office administrator and Greg, the maintenance supervisor, as well as the entire family of residents.
Our heartwarming experience with Northern Lakes Assisted Living began on Feb 1, 2024, when it became necessary for our 86 year old widowed sibling to require assistance with daily routine tasks. Having heard only very nice comments from numerous residents in Independent Living, we were fortunate for Sharon to receive a studio apartment in Northern Lakes Assisted Living. Angelique was so welcoming and encouraging, any hesitancy on Sharon’s part soon disappeared as she was invited to play any of the three pianos as often as she wanted. We were overwhelmed by the friendly professionalism of ALL the staff and the feeling of a warm “family” environment. The entire facility offers an upscale environment with multiple community social rooms and activity opportunities. The restaurant style cafeteria with entrees prepared by the competent chef, to include individualized food selections, is about as good as it gets! Sharon looks forward to monthly excursions on the facility bus. The grounds are beautifully manicured to present a park like environment and are adjacent to paved walking trails. After 5 months, Sharon loves this wonderful environment and looks forward to the remaining years of her life at Northern Lakes Assisted Living! After traveling and living around the world in a 33 year military career, we would rate NLSL and NLAL to be in the top 5 percent of nationwide senior facilities.

Do not put your loved one here. I have video of what looks like my loved one being physically restrained on two separate occasions by different staff members, video of my loved having his sheet ripped off him and thrown on his face and chest area by a staff member. Basic cares like teeth brushing, putting on glasses, hearing aids, deodorant, brief changes/toileting, safety checks being done very rarely to not being done at all. My loved one being told to soil himself in bed because the staff did not want to get him up after telling her he needed to use the bathroom. My loved one having 18 falls in a month and no plan in place to prevent falls in the future to keep him safe. Screaming at the top of his lungs for over 30 minutes before staff came to help him. Memory Care residents taking care of other Memory Care residents due to staff parking residents in common areas or hallways like a piece of furniture. We are very ashamed that our family put our loved one in this facility. Please be warned that this facility does not care about if service plan agreement cares that you are paying for are getting done or not. RUN FOR YOUR LIFE!!!!
I love that you replied to my review and say that you're looking forward to discussing this at the scheduled meeting this week but that will be impossible since you have now had me trespassed from the property and I can no longer see my loved one that does not have very much longer with us.

Northern Lakes has been a Godsend for my parents. My mom needs the added care and my dad can stay with her. The aids, caregivers and staff are so kind, caring, and professional. They provide such good care. The facility itself is beautiful, clean, and well maintained. It feels homey.

This is an extremely tough time to write a review about Northern Lakes Assisted Living - but I feel like this is important to let you know. Covid 19 has changed the way we do things day to day. The staff at Northern Lakes are taking extreme care at keeping my mother safe, comfortable, and entertained. I wondered how- but they have found a way to make personal visits, to continue the exercise routines with the residents-going floor to floor and having the residents work out at their doorway, even Bingo as my mom sits In her doorway and plays with those on her floor for prizes. Mom’s meals are delivered and snack carts come around with treats. The staff at Northern Lakes continue to remain upbeat and positive- always a ready smile or a sweet hello. I’m so glad my mom is in a place she loves so much where she has made so many new friends. During normal times the arboretum is just behind them- a place for a lovely walk or the grounds around the facility are well kept and inviting for a visit outside. Thank you Northern Lakes staff for going above and beyond in such extreme times!

Do you really care about our seniors or the $$ they provide you when they are on your care? My grandmother passed away in December and my grandfather can’t see, he needs his food explained to him in a 12 to 12 rotation. And he also needs help cutting his food as he can’t see to cut. And you and your staff charged him $17 for this? You’ve got to be kidding me. I will take this as far as it needs to go. Even to our attorney general, there are extras you charge for, there extras you don’t charge for. Helping someone with his meal is not one of those things your charge for. He is living in Northern Lakes Living Senior facilities. Would you seriously charge him $17 for every meal? Every time he needs help? Unbelievable!! I find this to be financial exploitation . Hopefully our attorney generals office will agree.

This assisted living facility is absolutely outstanding. Pre-COVID, I was there every week to visit my parents and have witnessed the operations for over three years. I love this place. It is like a luxury hotel and I want to move in. It is very clean and there is a library, patio with bird feeders, an exercise room and a wood-working shop. Before COVID they were able to have the most wonderful activities and I believe they will resume shortly. They took residents by bus to restaurants, shopping, pontoon rides and community fundraiser walks. In-house they do crafts, card games, putting competitions and social mixers just to mention a few events. They bring in fabulous musicians and presenters of interesting things. The food is very good and residents have alternatives if they don’t like what is on the menu.
The staff are truly caring and kind people, and they are terrific in communicating and helping to figure out what works best for everyone. This facility is also located next to the Brainerd Arboretum and residents can access the walking trails without having to cross a road. If you are looking for a terrific place for your family, this is absolutely hands-down the place to be.
