The Mustard Seed mission is to serve some of the most vulnerable in our community by providing a temporary home—and family!—for women and children without one. The workers and volunteers have a heart for helping people and surround the “residents” with many opportunities to better themselves and set their families up for future growth and success in life. There are many opportunities for people and other small businesses to come alongside and help their organization.

Ok let me see where do I start, hmm? Alright I know where I'll start at. It all started at the Mustard seed and it ended at the Mustard seed. The beginning date was January 2020 and the ending was October 2020.
January 25th I believe it was that I went to Saint Mary's Ascensions to be seen due to being assaulted by my abusive boyfriend and from there I received help with finding a safe place to to go. Which was the Mustard seed. When I arrived at the Mustard seed, it was a big beautiful two story house which housed women and children and it also had steps that I was unable to climb due to a disability that I encountered in a domestic violence relationship.
Due to the fact that I couldn't climb stairs, Amy Bartell the manager was nice enough to seek shelter for me else where and drove me all the way to Midland which was also a safe haven for battered women. However I felt like ok maybe it's a little too far and made my way back to Bay City to the Good Samaritan Rescue mission.
So between January and October of 2020 I was homeless due to domestic violence and other reasons as well. Oh I forgot to mention that Amy told me that I could come back in May of 2020 because the Mustard seed was in the process of having a single story building built for single women and that it'd be handicapped accessible and I was welcomed to come back if I had not found a stable place to live.
I checked back in May because of course I still hadn't found a place to live. Due to covid it was not finished being built.
Long story short is I remained homeless until August of 2020 contact Amy and she told me to come to the Mustard seed and that there was space for me I went stayed there until October 2 2020.
So that is how I began and ended at the Mustard seed.
I cried when I left the Mustard seed because the experts there showed genuine compassion.
They offered a ton of resources as well as activities such as movie nights, outings like Walmart shopping, ice cream runs, from time.
Transportation was provided. We had a class called Getting Ahead(via zoom)which also provided us with a ton of resources of getting out of poverty and staying out and we all graduated from it with a thousand dollar incentive along with a certificate.
What I miss most of all at the Mustard seed is how all ten of us women would sit down and have dinner every day at 5 pm. After Sister Leona finished preparing the meals.
I have to confess that the Mustard seed was a place that I always avoided even in a time of need of shelter. It turns out that it's actually one of the best places that I have encountered when it comes to being helped by the experts.
It really helped me because I like structured environment like the Mustard seed. We had curfew at 6pm which I love and respect. Up at 6am in bed at 10pm we had chores three days a week.
Amy Bartell is the most down to earth person when it comes to understanding misunderstood women.
She always went the extra mile to go above and beyond to make sure that no one was mistreated by being kicked out on the streets and kicked back into the situation that we came from. She understood and knew that we could not get the help that we needed if we weren't giving a chance.
I freaking love this place and I am working very hard to have this same type of service soon some day.
Mustard seed you rock!!!!!!
