Garezers is my favorite place on earth, my family has gone every year for decades. Its a beautiful environment with outstanding culture. As a child I went to the summer camp and stayed long term at Atbalsis and have so many fond memories.

My most recent trip there was unfortunate though, I brought with me 4 of my close friends who I wanted to show this place that is so important to me. The friends I brought were very obviously non-Latvians, my best friend is Chinese, and the other people staying at Atbalsis and Dzintara did everything to make them feel unwelcome. We were treated with scrutiny at our campsite at Atbalsis, asked about permits despite having gone to the office and paid to park our cars and stay there and shot nasty looks by other campers, the man camped next to us luckily was very friendly and very unhappy to see people asking us for permits which we found out to not be a thing management does, but the other campers we encountered were cold and obviously displeased with my guests.

I mentioned this to the wonderful lady at the management office and to her credit she was not happy to hear about it. Unfortunately this soured the trip as a whole, we made the best of it and kept to ourselves and only took one brief trip to Dzintara and went back to our campsite.

In the past my family would bring up non-Latvians on occasion and we never had an issue and other campers were warm and welcoming to our guests. Apparently that culture changed at some point.

Due to this I am pretty sure I won't be able to go to Garezers/Atbalsis for quite some time as I do one camping trip a year with my friends, and prefer to have a relaxing trip rather than one where I am apologizing to my friends constantly. I will probably have to wait until my family plans a trip and go with them. I will likely not bring non-Latvians again due to the way they were treated. Despite this I still love this place and will continue to go, just more infrequently now.
