My partner and I are active in the Kidsave program and we remember seeing Deacon at 2 of the events several months ago. These events are full of single adults, bi-racial couples, same-sex couples, senior adults, young adults, and people of all races and backgrounds. I can tell you from my own experience as a same-sex, mixed race couple, there is no discrimination. Anybody who claims discrimination at Kidsave as some sort excuse is shameful and unfounded. I have personally met Lauren, the director, and she and others have worked with us and I can honestly say that we have never come across anything other than helpfulness and respect.

The dress attire for events is very casual for obvious reasons. If someone showed up in a sport coat, dress shirt and jeans on a hot 90º summer day, and tried to bond with kids that are lucky to have shoes, it would definitely be out of place.

I can tell you that Kidsave is an amazing program and the counselors work with you through the whole process. Nothing in life is perfect but this organization does their best to give all willing adults the opportunity to be matched up with a youth for the opportunity to be that special mentor and make a difference in a kids life. My partner and I have been to organized large and small events with the kids and recently we just got back from an overnight camping event with the kids. It was amazing! There was outdoor activities like rock climbing, hiking, archery, swimming and plenty of time to bond with the kids. I feel lucky to be involved with this group.

The Kidsave Program works and I recommend everyone seeking more than a "Big Brother" situation to see their "Weekend Miracles" program where you can become a weekend host/mentor and make a huge difference in a disadvantaged youth's life.

Kidsave is an amazing agency. I have volunteered with them through their Weekend Host Program and the experienced gained is worth a lot. They match you with older kids in the system that are looking for hosts. The goal as a volunteer is to promote adoption and to promote/expose your kid to families and individuals who might be interested in adopting. The agency gives you the necessary training and tools for that. They also have events where both you and the child get to do different activities. i.e. The Grammy Museum, beach activities, sports, etc. Your commitment is only twice a month. It doesn't really have to be the whole weekend, but it could be one day two times a month or simply as having dinner/lunch with your kid twice a month.

Also, if you have been thinking about adopting a child and you are not sure if you are ready for it, this would be the perfect venue to get your "feet wet". You get to host a child and develop a relationship with him/her. You get to see first hand how the "system" works and with time you might be able to predict the needs of the child and see if you are ready to commit to adoption. If it doesn't work out, at least you made an impact on a child's life.
