I want to start by saying how much I love Hope’s and how truly thankful I am for all the ways they have helped my family. What they do for the community is such a blessing, and I will always be grateful for that. That’s why it’s hard for me to even write this, but I feel like I need to share my experience because it left me feeling deeply embarrassed and hurt.

At a recent Wednesday food grab, I misunderstood the directions about what could be taken. All the items were placed out on the table, and I was told “one of each.” Naturally, I thought that meant I could take one of each item laid out. When I did, I was yelled at, loudly, in front of everyone. In that moment, I felt small, humiliated, and ashamed — like a child being scolded in class instead of a mother just trying to provide for her family. Everyone turned to stare, and my heart just sank.

What hurt the most wasn’t the mix-up itself, but the way it was handled. I completely understand rules are needed to make sure everyone gets their fair share, but I wish it had been explained more kindly and privately instead of being called out so harshly in front of others. I left feeling judged for being in need, when in reality, I was just trying to feed my family.

We don’t qualify for government assistance due to technicalities that feel so unfair, so programs like Hope’s are sometimes the only safety net we have. That makes moments like this even harder because it feels like the one place I turn to for support sees me as a problem instead of a person. I know this isn’t true for everyone there, and I know their mission is rooted in love and service — but that day, it didn’t feel that way.

I still thank the Lord for Hope’s and for all the people who give their time and effort to help others. My gratitude hasn’t changed, but my heart was hurt. I only wish that the situation could have been handled with more compassion and understanding, because those of us who come are often already carrying heavy burdens. A gentle word goes a long way, especially when someone is struggling.

Things are rough and today was my first time at Hopes. They were very friendly. The food they gave us was amazing and included fresh fruit and veggies, bread, and of course sweet treats for my kiddos. I'm grateful.

Hope's is a great place to get food if you and your family are in a bind! Tuesday from 9:30-1, you can come get a box. (Bring an ID) Kimberly and her volunteers are kind and helpful. I have enjoyed all my time volunteering there!

Called multiple times during their open hours and was sent to voicemail every time. Their inbox gives the wrong address, says it is on Commercial Drive when it’s on Rockwood. It also said they were open Mon-Fri after July 13, but their sign on the fence only says Mon-Wed. Very confusing, and they’re only open until 1pm, so good luck if you want to donate but work during the week.
