This shelter is horrible. I got sent here by the police because my parents were abusing me and I didn't have anywhere else to go, so I was taken here for shelter. I stayed for a night and when it was time for intake, they tried to leave me on the side of the road and I told them I didn't have a car or anywhere to get to the clinic to get my medicine, because I'm in prescription medication. They told me I can't leave my things there to go get it when I asked and printed our directions and metro bus passes and when I stayed on the side of the road for a while, all of a sudden a lady comes to get me. When constantly called out for this behavior and what they did, they eventually got the police involved to send me to a psych ward where I died in Ben Taub's care. I was resuscitated but then the police took me to another hospital and when I got back, they denied me services again because I didn't have my medicine which was the problem the first time. They do not take homeless youth off the streets like they promised. I might as well have been a homeless youth on the street while the police dealt with my parents but these people hazed me and got me sent to psych wards to get rid of me and said that I was pretending I was a witch and was casting spells on people when I was denied entry to the shelter. They used their own understanding of my religion against me to put me in a psych ward. That is a religious hate crime in and of itself. But enough about that, them having me the way they did is a problematic issue in and of itself because it's very predatory to put homeless youth through that, especially to put them in a psych ward because you don't like you were called out for what you did.

I was here years ago I will forever carry this beautiful path in my life thank you covenant house and everyone that donated to the Covenant house ❤️ they never gave up on me I believe those are the times i needed the most help you never know what brought anyone to the Covenant house,from traumas I'm happy this place brought hope and understanding the impact in my life I will forever share & cherish this foundation keep helping the youth the only thing that was there God and the Covenant house 🏡💕💕💕I'm so happy there is a place that just helps and helps through all these years all I have to say to the Future Youth that comes here do the right thing I know at times it hurts so much understanding life just know life is not easy their is places that other youth get no help make so much off this place instead of hanging out follow the guide and be successful follow the rules respect everyone get up when it's time without nand go far realize this place is off Donations you will know to cherish every meal every second to help you survive in the real world 🌍

This place practically saved my life, my name is Justice Velez. I decided to leave home at 16, I thought I was grown and ran away from home. I soon realized I was solo in the world and had no direction. After a year or so I involved myself with some peers that weren’t positive on my outcome in life to say the least. I did multiple stints in Harris County Jail at 17. Would do my time, commit another crime and get locked up again.

Whenever I turned 18 I went to the Covenant House after nearly dying from antibiotics I was allergic to and mixing drugs in the equation. They were more or less the same as what Younger Adult Foster is, care for Young Adults Leaving a system and being homeless.( this is a big factor on Young Adults achieving success ). They fed me, led me, gave me tools I needed to succeed and I tried my best, but ultimately my decisions in life were apparently made. I got caught selling my prescription of Pain Medication outside of Covenant House, they had no choice but to terminate me which is understandable, but the help didn’t stop outside of those doors. They had community, or fed you or clothes you to find a job even if you were discharged. outreaches within blocks of each other, Street Church which was held next door, and they occasionally would let you stay the night.

Eventually I worked hard got out of my ways and completed my GED and completed Multiple Trade Specialties. This place literally kept me alive so I could strive. I made a 360 in life, have a wife and kids that love me. If it wasn’t for this place I wouldn’t have made it.

It’s my 9th year anniversary of defeating homelessness and becoming a living testimony among others. I’m very humble so I don’t speak of it, my kids and wife barely know the true story as it’s trapped in my head and compartments for my well-being.

I had a wonderful experience here way back in 1991, wow what a long time ago, and rights of passage in 1993, wow how things have changed in houston and the montrose area, moved to san francisco in 1997, but still miss the shelter, it did well for me, thank you again.

I'm a youth that experienced homelessness and had no way to get legal documents that I needed in order to get a job or get my other paperwork in order. Thankfully, I was able to get into the program and didn't have to worry about where I would potentially sleep or get my meals from. The Covenant House does help you get the things you need, you just have to put in effort and everything else will follow through.
