The Cherry Valley Museum was a gem! I wanted to go through Cherry Valley from Cooperstown to our next destination anyway. So I was glad to see this museum was open. There are museums that have artifacts in them, and then there is this museum, which is loaded with artifacts and tools, and significant historical items, from the massacre! This museum was full from the bottom floor and the upper level. The museum person at the time, did a great job being informative. She passed a lot of information about the massacre, the building across the street, the house for the museum, and of course Cherry Valley. We found out that the first female eye specialist in the U.S. was from Cherry Valley, NY. There are plenty of her eye glasses, that she made in the museum. There are 3 things that are pretty special in the museum. First, a very detailed diorama about the massacre and how it developed. Second, there is a clock facepiece from the time of the massacre, that is still working! Only the facepiece is from the period. Third, there is a bible that was being held, and that bible was pierced with a spear, that pierced and killed the person holding it. You can see where the pages are torn by the spear. If you want to visit this place, read up about the Cherry Valley Massacre during the American Revolution. Also another claim to fame is the Samuel Morse story. I think everyone has heard of Morse Code!

Went here today and I LOVED it! The collection of the varying artifacts are presented nicely and the notes explaining each and every piece here was easy to read and concise. The diorama of the massacre was well put and these fascinating displays are definitely something to take in and learn about. The gentleman at the door was very kind and helpful before and after touring around the place. Definitely will come here again.

I went online to check for their hours of operation and finally got a chance to check this gem of a museum out. They have over 13 rooms of remarkable items that really need to be seen in person to truly appreciate!! The volunteers that work there are really nice and welcomed our questions. This is worth the trip to check out!!!

Cherry Valley was where "Westward Ho!" began. In the early 1800s, before the railroad, people would take a stage coach from Albany to Cherry Valley. There were 52 inns in the town then (many are now homes). These people would then suit up a Conestoga Wagon, with all the gear and horses they would need for Westward expansion - to Ohio, Michigan, Wisconsin and further points west. They would head out on what is now called Route 20. On GPS, it is still has it's original name, "The Cherry Valley Turnpike, between Skaneateles and Albany. The Museum captures the flavor of this amazing history - and so much more. Founded in 1720, surviving a revolutionary war massacre; Samuel F. B. Morse spent time here socializing with his Yale buddy, James Fennimore Cooper. In the 20th Century Allen Ginsburg founded the Committee on Poetry in the hills just outside Cherry Valley. He was followed by other Beat Poets and jazz musicians, including jazz pianist Paul Bley, poets Ray Bremser, Charles Plymell and others.
