After the death of my dad, 2 months ago, I can now write about what happened to him at this horrible place. For the love of god, DO NOT, take your loved ones to this place and leave them. I am still feeling so heartbroken that he spent his last 6 months of life in such a wretched place. The nursing staff( nurse of the year, mind you, ) put a drug order in for my dad to take an antidepressant which the doctor NEVER ordered it for him. He was on this drug for 2 weeks and he was out of it because of taking this drug. During this time he was very confused and scared. He called me at all hours of the day and night. If he wasn't calling me, he was sleeping, due to the reaction his body had while taking this drug. It affected him badly and the staff just down played the fact it happened., saying it was no big deal, it happens. The drug they were wrongly giving him affected both his mental and physical state, robbing us of time with dad. This nurse has done this before to other residents there and she is still working there. She was scared to call me and tell me what she did and wanted hospice to call and let me know. Hospice informed her it was her mistake, and she needed to tell me what she did. The DON told me more education was going to be done. I happen to know that this "education" consists of signing your name on a sheet of paper and not having to attend the meeting and that's the extent of the so called more education. But it looks good, right? Wrong!!! In so many ways, giving a person a prescribed medication that they are not suppose to be one is just wrong.
Some Staff at this facility had asked me many times to call corportate in Des Moines and have me complain. The staff said they have even called in their complaints but nothing gets done. I did call corporate many times and I will now call and put in more of my concerns about this nurse still employed there. I have adamantly asked that she be fired. I have also complained to the State of Iowa and they did an investigation also.
The communication in this place, with the so called people in charge, is a joke. Their only concern is to get a pay check and ignored my concerns completely. Nothing changed in the 6 months dad was there. I had a few meetings with staff and my concerns fell on deaf ears. I asked for dads charted records and I have yet to receive them!
House keeping is another nightmare. I finally had to purchase my own cleaning supplies and cleaned my dads room many times.
This is a no smokimg facility, no one is allowed to smoke on the premises. There is a sign as you drive in saying No Smoking etc. YET, the employees were allowed to smoke outside the window where residents are eating. No smoking rule needs to apply to everyone! Otherwise, take yout sign down and cater to the residents and their wants.
I was in the process of getting my dad out of this horrible place and moving him to a better place ,when he took a turn for the worse and passed away.
Please look into Accura health care facilites in Iowa. This place in Carroll has been cited along with the other Accura facilities many times. Do your home work and dig deep. This place is not the place you want your loved one cared for.
Please advocate for your loved ones. I wish I would've done better by my dad. Hopefully this review can save someone else from the heartache we had to go thru in this place.
