I’m an 18 year old college student who just got housing so I needed a bit of help with affording food. No one can take my call no one is available to help me and I’ve been without food for some time. This system is crazy. No help. No support. Nothing. I’ve been approved for MORE THAN A MONTH and have not received my card yet. I have a case worker but he’s out for a whole month and his supervisor will not return my calls. This system failed me.

I managed to arrived around 8:55 AM and was done by 10:30 AM. I went to the first floor lobby. There's 3 greeters there. One of the greeters asks you what your issue is about and figures out how to direct you. I received a number and it was called almost immediately after I received for me to go to one of the walk up windows. Then, my case got escalated twice and I received further help via a remote worker who was friendly and knowledgeable.

Some tips for folks going:
1) Traffic is horrendous in this area in the morning as there is a school and other government buildings. Budget extra time.

2) Write down all of your concerns, facts and issues into a summary cover letter and bring backup documents. Workers are friendly, but they are also working quickly to triage cases and figure out how to direct you. Be prepared to advocate for yourself in a concise and succinct way. Having your cover letter handy makes it easier for workers to show their supervisor what is going on and it helped me get my case further escalated.

3) Bring a pen, paper, snacks and water to keep yourself calm and sane. There are 2 waiting rooms with loudspeakers that call the numbers so don't plan to listen to music or podcasts while you wait. You need to pay attention as the numbers come up fast.

I would recommend going in person over calling unless you have a particularly nice case worker assigned to you. I found the in-person experience to be much more service-oriented, friendlier and responsive.

Hope this info helps if you have to go!

This place is a joke. They are purposely ignoring calls. I’ve been calling for months trying to get assistance and every time I get a message telling me there is a high volume of calls and that they can’t get to me before hanging up altogether. I guess if you’re poor you mean absolutely nothing to these folks.

Where you go to to get your ebt, medi-cal, ga, on the first floor. And you find resources and look for work on the 3rd floor.

I have called for over a month and have yet to speak with my social worker even after leaving several voicemails. Now that number is disconnected. I’ve also called the general ACSSA number and have been put on hold over 3 hours before I gave up. Safe to say the service is despicable.

They call it a “self sufficiency” center but there’s nothing self sufficient about this place. You can never get ahold of an actual person. Call volume is always “high” then it disconnects your call and says call back later. If you go in person you’ll be waiting for hours to talk with someone. If you leave messages for a worker they never call you back. It sucks to be poor. The system sucks and it’s broken.
