to parents looking to place their kids here, i’d say it’s not worth it.

i came here about a decade ago so i don’t know the current state of this place, but when i came here the place was pretty dumpy. there was a major ant infestation in the kitchen, i remember there were even ants in my cereal because they were all over the pantry & counter tops. they locked up all the food and we were only allowed to eat when the staff felt like it. we made our own meals it was mostly sandwiches, cereal, mac & cheese etc.. very basic foods. the water also tasted really bad for some reason, i literally had my mom bring me a jug of water from home every time she visited because it was so bad and i was getting dehydrated from not wanting to drink it.
the staff was pretty nice to me but they didn’t really seem trained to handle the kids who acted out. there was this 12 year old kid who would regularly freak out and threaten to harm/kill us. for a few days it was only me, him and a 5’3 petite staff member who was as scared of him as i was, i didn’t feel safe or protected there. the staff also made us wash their cars which i thought was kind of strange, way to take advantage of troubled youth. i didn’t really do much there, i remember spending a lot of time in my room journaling and just being in my head. to be fair i was the only kid there my first week so they probably just didn’t know what to do with me. the one good thing was the family therapy which i felt actually helped me and my moms relationship a little bit. the staff took me to the library a couple times and let me pick out books to read at the home because it was kind of boring there and i really enjoyed that. we were also allowed to go to oceanside pier several times because it was close by and that was also fun for us. it was bittersweet but overall id say not worth the experience.

I learned how to pick locks here because the food pantry was kept locked. I will also forever remember Nikki's smile - because she always made a squelching noise when her cheeks raised. Best 2 weeks of my adolescence.
